This resolution authorizes the acceptance and use by the Police Department of a temporary gift from American Family Insurance of certain motor vehicles for investigative purposes. The Chief of Police is authorized to enter into an agreement by which the City will indemnify American Family for any liability incurred as a result of this use, and may return the vehicles to American Family when they are no longer needed. _____________________________________________
BODY:
Whereas, on December 16, 1986, the Common Council adopted File Number 86-1389 which created guidelines for handling the authorization and/or expenditure of contributions received by the City; and

Whereas, the Police Department wishes to use certain vehicles for investigative purposes relative to car thefts; and

Whereas, police departments in other municipalities have utilized donated vehicles and have found the program to be successful; and

Whereas, American Family Insurance Group has offered to make a temporary donation of vehicles for the use of the Milwaukee Police Department, if the City provides it with indemnification for liability arising from the Police Department's use of the vehicles, and if the City returns title to the vehicles to American Family Insurance Group when they are no longer needed so that the vehicles, if appropriate, may be used by other law enforcement agencies or be disposed of; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee that the Chief of Police is authorized to accept on behalf of the City the above described tempora...
