Title

Substitute resolution directing the Department of Public Works to explore the possibility of opening a third drop-off center.

Analysis

This resolution directs the Department of Public Works to explore the possibility of opening a third drop-off center and to report its findings to the Common Council.

Body

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee has 2 drop-off centers for the disposal and recycling of residential waste, one located at 3879 W Lincoln Avenue on the city’s South Side and the other at 6660 N Industrial Road on the North Side; and

Whereas, In 2023, the City received 363 illegal dumping complaints, and in 2024 the City has received over 380 complaints; and

Whereas, Cleaning up illegal dump sites on municipally-owned land costs the City over $1.2 million per year; and

Whereas, This figure does not include the cost incurred by private property owners, who are responsible for cleaning any illegal dumping on their own property; and

Whereas, The 2025 Budget was adopted by Common Council File Number 240001 on November 8, 2023; and

Whereas, Amendment 43 placed a footnote in the 2025 Budget directing the the Department of Public Works “to explore the possibility of opening a third drop-off center and to report its findings to the Common Council.”; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Department of Public Works is directed to explore the possibility of opening a third drop-off center; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Department of Public Works shall provide a report of its findings and recommendations to the Common Council within 60 days of adoption of this resolution.
