Analysis
This resolution authorizes the City Clerk’s Office - Historic Preservation Commission to accept and expend a Certified Local Government grant of $16,500 awarded by the Wisconsin Historical Society. This grant will fund study for National Register of Historic Places listing for two historically Black churches: Calvary Baptist Church at 2959 N. Teutonia Avenue and St. Benedict the Moor Roman Catholic Church at 930 W. State Street.

Whereas, In 2023, the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) oversaw a survey to expand on the 1966 “City of Steeples” report, and in doing so, to catalog Milwaukee’s Modern religious architecture, with an eye towards documenting Milwaukee’s Black and non-Christian religious histories; and

Whereas, By using houses of worship as a basis and covering previously neglected areas of the city, the Historic Preservation Commission engaged in citywide outreach, focusing on 20th-century targets in every aldermanic district; and

Whereas, The HPC’s 2023 survey identified 38 religious properties potentially eligible for local historic designation and/or listing on the National Register of Historic Places; and

Whereas, The Wisconsin Historical Society selected two historically black churches for potential listing on the National Register of Historic Places:

· Calvary Baptist Church at 2959 N. Teutonia Avenue (Ald. District 6)
· St. Benedict the Moor Roman Catholic Church at 930 W. State Street (Ald. District 4)
