Analysis
This resolution directs the Department of Public Works to install rapid flashing beacons at the mid-block pedestrian crosswalk at 487 E. Juneau Avenue.
Body
Whereas, Rapid flashing beacons are used to reduce the incidence of crashes and increase safety at uncontrolled crosswalks; and
Whereas, Rapid flashing beacons use an irregular flash pattern that is similar to emergency flashers on emergency vehicles and which can be activated by pedestrians manually by a push button or passively by a pedestrian detection system; and
Whereas, The Common Council has identified a need for enhanced pedestrian safety at the mid-block crosswalk at 487 E. Juneau Avenue, particularly due to concerns of residents about unsafe encounters between pedestrians and vehicular traffic; and
Whereas, The installation of rapid flashing beacons at the mid-block crosswalk at 487 E. Juneau Avenue will enhance safety for pedestrians and increase driver awareness of potential pedestrian conflicts; and
Whereas, The installation of rapid flashing beacons is an effective way to increase walkability in a community without significant infrastructure changes; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Department of Public Works is directed to install rapid flashing beacons at the mid-block pedestrian crosswalk at 487 E. Juneau Avenue.
