Substitute resolution directing the Board of Zoning Appeals to provide annual reports to the Common Council.

Analysis

This resolution directs the Board of Zoning Appeals to provide annual reports to the Common Council.

Body

Whereas, The Board of Zoning Appeals receives applications for, reviews and grants special use permits, dimensional variances, use variances, changes of operator, and other types of appeals of administrative determinations of the City staff relating to application of the Zoning Code; and

 

Whereas, The Board typically receives 600-800 appeals each year, and

 

Whereas, The Common Council has an interest in knowing the number and distribution -- geographically and by type -- of the appeals filed with the Board and granted by the Board each year, as well as any trends in the nature of appeals filed with the Board; and

 

Whereas, The 2026 Budget was adopted by Common Council File Number 250001 on November 7, 2025; and

 

Whereas, Amendment 89 placed a footnote in the 2026 Budget directing the Board of Zoning Appeals to annually report to the Common Council on applications filed and granted; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Board of Zoning Appeals is directed to annually report to the Common Council on applications filed with, and granted by, the Board; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That the Board of Zoning Appeals shall provide these reports no later than April 1 of each year.
