Analysis

This resolution directs the Milwaukee Water Works to coordinate with the Milwaukee Health Department when replacing lead water service laterals.

Body

Whereas, The Milwaukee Water Works plans to replace 5,000 lead water service laterals in 2026; and

 

Whereas, The Milwaukee Water Works conducts a testing protocol to monitor the levels of lead in drinking water; and

 

Whereas, The Milwaukee Health Department offers a Primary Prevention Program for owners and tenants who would like to ensure their homes are lead safe, and maintains a set of City of Milwaukee childhood lead poisoning data and reports; and

 

Whereas, The 2026 Budget was adopted by Common Council File Number 250001 on November 7, 2025; and

 

Whereas, Amendment 102 placed a footnote in the 2026 Budget directing the Department of Public Works - Water Works to coordinate with the Milwaukee Health Department when replacing lead water service laterals; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Department of Public Works - Water Works shall coordinate with the Milwaukee Health Department when replacing lead water service laterals; and, be it,

 

Further Resolved, that the Department of Public Works - Water Works and the Milwaukee Health Department shall jointly communicate to the Common Council a summary of the coordination occurring between the departments when replacing lead water service laterals within 120 days of adoption of this resolution.
