Title

Substitute resolution directing certain City officials to recommend policies and procedures to govern the closing of City facilities due to weather.

Analysis

This resolution directs certain City officials to recommend policies and procedures to govern the closing of City facilities due to weather and to submit those recommendations to the Common Council within 30 days.

 

Body

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee sometimes experiences inclement weather that is severe enough to prompt the closing of City offices and services; and

 

Whereas, A number of health, environmental, and social factors may inhibit a City employee’s ability to work, or travel to work, during instances of extreme weather; and

 

Whereas, Many City departments, including the Health Department, the Department of Public Works, and the Department of Employee Relations, are capable of determining when conditions are too dangerous for employees to attempt to travel to work or perform their duties; and

 

Whereas, The heads of these departments are qualified to make closure policy recommendations based on their specific departments’ expertise; and

 

Whereas, Policy recommendations should specify the weather conditions in which City work, or travel to work, is dangerous or impossible, and how to manage such an event; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Mayor, the President of the Common Council, the Commissioner of the Health Department, the Commissioner of Public Works, and the Director of Employee Relations shall recommend policies and procedures to govern the closing of City facilities due to weather; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That these City officials shall submit recommendations to the Common Council within 30 days.
