This resolution authorizes the Milwaukee Police Department to apply for a COPS More Grant from the United States Department of Justice, Community Oriented Policing Services in the amount of $360,000. The purpose of the grant is to reduce crime and improve public safety using technology. The grant consists of mobile data computer equipment which will enhance service levels and efficiency.
 
 
BODY:
Whereas, The City of Milwaukee appears to be eligible for grant funds from the United States Department of Justice, Community Oriented Policing Services for a COPS More Grant; and
 
Whereas, The catalog of federal domestic assistance number (CFDA) is 16.710; and
 
Whereas, It is appropriate for the City of Milwaukee to apply for such grant funds in the amount of $360,000, federal funding (75%), $120,000 local asset forfeiture funding (25%), for a total of $480,000, provided that no funds will be accepted or expended without express Common Council approval by resolution; and
 
Whereas, The 25% required local match of $120,000 would come from 1998 asset forfeiture funds for MDC's; and
 
Whereas, The grant would enhance the number of MDC's that could be acquired to proceed with the program; now, therefore, be it
 
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that application by the Milwaukee Police Department to the United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services is authorized; and, be it
 
Further Resolved, That acceptance and expenditure of these funds by the Milwaukee Police Department is not authorized herein and any such acceptance and expenditure shall require express Common Council approval by adoption of a separate resolution.
