This resolution assigns the honorary street name, "Reuben K. Harpole, Jr.", to West North Avenue, from North 1st Street to North 2nd Street in the 6th Aldermanic District.
Body
Whereas, Reuben K. Harpole, Jr. has been a tireless advocate for the needy and low-income throughout Milwaukee, but especially for the young in Milwaukee’s African-American community for more than 40 years; and
Whereas, Mr. Harpole combined his avocation with his vocation and worked for 31 years at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to enable disadvantaged young people to attend college and inspire these young people to expand their financial, cultural and social horizons through higher education, finally retiring in 1997 as Senior Outreach Specialist at UWM’s Center for Urban Community Development; and
Whereas, While at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Mr. Harpole was the inspiration and impetus for the Volunteer Reading Tutoring Program developed by the UWM Reading Clinic designed to train community volunteers to help young students improve their reading skills; and
Whereas, Mr. Harpole put the skills he gained through his career at UWM to work and continued his commitment to improving the quality of life for Milwaukee’s youth by accepting a position as Programming Director at the philanthropic Helen Bader Foundation, and now serves as Special Advisor to Foundation President Daniel Bader; and
Whereas, Mr. Harpole created the Helen Bader Foundation’s Sankofa-Youth Development program area which is dedicated to awarding grants to smaller, grassroots-oriented organizations, managed this program area for 10 years and oversaw more than $5.6 million in grants from the Foundation awarded to support programs t...
