Analysis
This resolution authorizes the Department of Public Works-Operations Division (Forestry Section) to apply for, and accept and fund, a 2005 Challenge Grant from the National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council. This grant will be used to fund a three-year pilot program, Grow Green Careers, to guide minority and underserved populations into careers in urban forestry. The total project cost is $623,147, of which $337,957 (54%) will be provided in-kind by the City and $285,190 (46%) will be provided by the grantor. The Grow Green Careers program will include the following components:

Partner with Milwaukee Public Schools and the Private Industry Council of Milwaukee County to develop an urban forestry curriculum and focus its use on three target high schools (potentially Milwaukee High School of the Arts, Harold S. Vincent High School and Riverside University High School) to encourage interest and increase awareness of urban forestry among minority and underserved populations.

Expose interested high school students to professional urban forestry operations through summer internship opportunities with the City's Forestry Section.

Provide successful high school internship candidates grant-funded scholarships to pursue post-secondary education through an associate's or bachelor's degree in urban forestry from partner institutions such as Milwaukee Area Technical College, Mid-State Technical College, UW-Stevens Point or Southern University.

Employ college-enrolled students as Urban Forestry Interns in fulfillment of their educational requirements. Upon completion of an associate's or bachelor's degree in urban forestry, graduates will be offered employment with the City's Fore...
