Title

Substitute Resolution amending the City of Milwaukee’s legislative package to include a provision urging the State of Wisconsin and the federal government to establish and fund a grant program to encourage owners of multi-family properties to retrofit fire suppression systems.

Analysis

This resolution directs the Legislative Affairs Division and Department of Administration - Intergovernmental Relations Division to seek introduction and passage of State and federal legislation to establish and fund a grant program to encourage owners of multi-family properties to retrofit fire suppression systems.

Body

Whereas, A devastating fire in a multi-family building located at N. 27th Street and W. Highland Boulevard tragically claimed the lives of 5 victims on Mother’s Day this year; and

 

Whereas, The Milwaukee Fire Department indicated that lives would likely have been saved if the building had an automatic sprinkler system; and

 

Whereas, Passage of new legislation to encourage owners of multi-family buildings to install new fire suppression systems could minimize the risk of similar tragedies occurring in the future; therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Department of Administration-Intergovernmental Relations Division is directed to seek introduction and passage of state and federal legislation to establish and fund a grant program to encourage owners of multi-family properties to retrofit fire suppression systems; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That Common Council Resolution File Number 241415 is amended by inserting the following item in the document attached to the file as “Amended State Legislative Packet”:

 

Public Safety:  Fire Suppression

Introduce legislation to establish a grant program to encourage owners of multi-family properties to retrofit fire suppression systems.

Further Resolved, That the City Clerk shall forward copies of this resolution to members of the City of Milwaukee’s delegation to the Wisconsin Legislature.
