This resolution expresses the Common Council's support for recent efforts undertaken by Midwest Airlines in its quest to return the company to financial solvency and profitability; and urges City and state residents, the business community and all levels of government to be supportive of Midwest Airlines' efforts and use Midwest Airlines for travel.

Whereas, Since its founding 19 years ago, Midwest Airlines has been among the nation's premier airlines providing quality travel experience to its customers; and
 
Whereas, Midwest Airlines provides multiple benefits to all Wisconsin residents---family-supporting jobs, a higher national profile, an increase in the quality of life and enhanced attractiveness to businesses considering relocation; and
 
Whereas, Midwest Airlines is the leading carrier serving General Mitchell International Airport, and the only one with a hub at this airport, providing non-stop service to 46 destinations, a vital service for Wisconsin businesses; and
 
Whereas, The long-term health of both Midwest Airlines and the General Mitchell International Airport is a matter of vital concern to all the citizens of the City of Milwaukee; and
 
Whereas, Midwest Airlines has recently faced some daunting financial challenges resulting from the sluggish economy, the September 11, 2001, attacks and increased competition from low-cost carriers; and
 
Whereas, Midwest Airlines has taken and continues to take measures to return the company to profitability, including agreements with labor unions, banks, other creditors and aircraft leasing companies, designed to bring about cost savings and productivity improvements; and
 
Whereas, Earlier this year, the Milwaukee business community launched a campaign to encourage pre-purchase of millions of dollars worth of airline tickets from Midwest Airlines; and
 
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Common Council expresses its support for recent efforts undertaken by Midwest Airlines in its quest to return the company to financial solvency and profitability; and urges City and state residents, the business community and all levels of government to be supportive of Midwest Airline efforts and use Midwest Airlines for travel; and, be it
 
Further Resolved, That the City Clerk shall forward a copy of this resolution to Midwest Airlines.
