Title

Resolution expressing the Common Council's support for an urban health conference to be held at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee on May 31, 2001.

 

Analysis

The School of Allied City Health Professions of the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, in conjunction with the City Health Department, has planned an urban health conference to be held at the University on May 31, 2001.  The conference will address issues relating to urban health problems affecting disadvantaged people, including African-Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics, Asians and other ethnic groups, as well as women, children and elderly citizens in general.

 

This resolution expresses the Common Council's support for this conference, and authorizes and directs the Health Department and the Department of Administration – Intergovernmental Relations Division to work with the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee to plan for and carry out the conference, as well as to assist in identifying and applying for state and federal grants for both this conference and future programs.

 

Body

Whereas, The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee's School of Allied Health Professions, under the guidance of Dean Randall Lambrecht, in conjunction with City Health Commissioner Seth Foldy, has planned a major urban health conference which will be held at the University on May 31, 2001; and

 

Whereas, The conference will address issues relating to urban health problems affecting disadvantaged people, including African-Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics, Asians and other ethnic groups, as well as women, children and elderly citizens in general; and

 

Whereas, Dean Lambrecht and his staff have been working with Commissioner Foldy and his staff to develop an urban health partnership between the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee and the City of Milwaukee; and

 

Whereas, The Common Council finds that a cooperative effort by the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee and the City to achieve a "Healthiest Milwaukee" would be beneficial to Milwaukee citizens and consistent with the University's "Milwaukee Idea"; and

 

Whereas, Under proposals that have been forwarded recently by the Governor's Blue-Ribbon Commission on State-Local Partnerships, it is beneficial for governmental units to enter into intergovernmental agreements to qualify for additional state funding; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Common Council finds it mutually beneficial for the City and the School of Allied Health Professions of the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee to enter into an urban health partnership; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That the Common Council expresses its support for the urban health conference to be held at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee on May 31, 2001; and be it

 

Further Resolved, That the Health Department and the Department of Administration – Intergovernmental Relations Division are authorized and directed to work with the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee to plan for and carry out a comprehensive urban health conference, as well as to assist the University in identifying and applying for state and federal grants for both this conference and future programs.
