This resolution authorizes the City Clerk to expend up to $50,000 from the MKE Community Excellence Fund Special Purpose Account for various events and initiatives in 2020.
Body
Whereas, The City has allocated $50,000 in funding in 2020 for the MKE Community Excellence Fund Special Purpose Account (“SPA”); and
Whereas, The purpose of this SPA is to provide resources to support community events that promote peace and violence prevention, with the intention that allocations from the SPA will be matched by contributions from local organizations; and
Whereas, BIG Serve MKE is a weeklong series of community service events intended to be a keystone of the City’s efforts to create an environment where residents can succeed and achieve their life goals; and
Whereas, The focus of BIG Serve MKE is service to the community, with activities, including the BIG Clean MKE neighborhood clean-up events, designed to foster quality-of-life improvements, neighborhood pride and community engagement; and
Whereas, The Girls’ Day at City Hall initiative exposes young women of high school and middle school age to strong female role models in political leadership positions as well as careers in public service; and
Whereas, The 10th Annual Girls’ Day event, on March 12, 2020, will include speakers, panel discussions, and workshops in addition to opportunities for active engagement and involvement with several public service-oriented organizations and entities focused on young women and led by women; and
Whereas, Bronzeville Week, August 1-8, 2020, highlights the Bronzeville Cultural and Entertainment District, a City of Milwaukee redevelopment initiative inspired by Milwaukee’s original Bronzeville District of the early- to mid-1900’s; and
Whereas, The 21st-century Bronzeville initiative strives to revitalize an area of Milwaukee where African-American culture has been a mainstay and offers unique opportunities for residents and tourists to enjoy the best Milwaukee has to offer in entertainment, arts and culture; and
Whereas, Hip-Hop Week MKE, August 17-22, 2020, is a local campaign inspired by the idea that hip-hop, through the lens of health, financial literacy and civic engagement, can transform a community; and
Whereas, Hip-Hop Week MKE promotes partnership with schools and local and national community groups to use hip-hop as a tool to teach youth and adults about financial literacy, political awareness and health issues affecting the city population; and
Whereas, Harvest Fest is a community event held annually at Harold S. Vincent High School for residents of Milwaukee to come together as a community, support the students who are participating in the High School’s agriculture program, and celebrate the autumn season and its bounty; and
Whereas, Harvest Fest highlights the Milwaukee Public Schools’ robust agriculture, culinary, botany and aquaponics programs, features games, food, hay rides, pumpkins and a petting zoo, and provides an opportunity for students to sell organic products made from ingredients harvested from the school’s farm; and
Whereas, Fourth of July festivities in Noyes Park, sponsored by the Noyes Park Fourth of July Association, will include a flag-raising, parade, ice cream, games and fireworks; and
Whereas, Fourth of July festivities at Noyes Park are intended to be community-building and to bring residents together for a day of family-friendly entertainments and activities; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the City Clerk is directed to expend up to $50,000 from the MKE Community Excellence Fund Special Purpose Account (0001 1310 S246 006300) in the following amounts for payment or reimbursement of expenses related to 2020 events:
