Analysis

This resolution directs the Department of City Development and the Department of Neighborhood Services, as well as any other relevant departments, to develop a plan for the utilization of the City’s vacant lots.

Body

Whereas, In the 2021 Budget, the Department of City Development was directed to create a healing spaces initiative to utilize the City’s vacant lots; and

 

Whereas, Placed under the Neighborhood Improvement Development Corporation, the Healing Spaces Initiative received $50,000 as part of the 2022 Budget; and

 

Whereas, The 2024 Budget allocates $3,064,000 for targeted demolitions by the Department of Neighborhood Services; and

 

Whereas, These funds will translate into demolition of approximately 180 properties; and

Whereas, These additional lots represent only a fraction of the over 4,100 City-owned vacant lots; and

 

Whereas, The 2024 Budget was adopted by Common Council File Number 230001 on November 3, 2023; and

 

Whereas, Amendment 11 placed a footnote in the 2024 Budget directing “the Departments of City Development and Neighborhood Services to develop a plan for vacant lots”; now, therefore, be it now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Department of City Development and the Department of Neighborhood Services, as well as any other relevant departments, are directed to develop a plan for the utilization of the City’s vacant lots; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That that the Department of City Development, Department of Neighborhood Services shall present the finalized plan to the Common Council within 6 months of adoption of this resolution.
