ANLS:
- Analysis -
This resolution provides $15,000 from the Economic Development Committee Fund (Account No. 01-032-8001) to support the activities of the Milwaukee Jobs Initiative, a collaborative project designed to connect central city residents to family-supporting jobs.
BODY:
Whereas, The 1998 City Budget provides $119,000 in the Economic Development Committee Fund (Account No. 01-032-8001), an account to be used for the purposes of promoting the City of Milwaukee's economic development programs, retaining industry and employers in the City, and attracting new industry to the City; and
Whereas, The Annie E. Casey Foundation has provided a grant to establish the Milwaukee Jobs Initiative, a broad-based effort involving business, labor and community leaders devoted to developing customized training and job placement and retention; and
Whereas, In its first 18 months of operation, the Milwaukee Jobs Initiative has established the Central City Workers' Center, the Manufacturing Jobs Connection, and the Printing Industry Prototype; and
Whereas, These three programs are responding to the need for qualified workers in targeted industries; and
Whereas, The Milwaukee Jobs Initiative is seeking $15,000 as part of the local financial support it is required to provide as a condition of continued financial support by the Annie E. Casey Foundation; and
Whereas, The activities and goals of the Milwaukee Jobs Initiative are consistent with the purposes of the Economic Development Committee Fund; and
Whereas, A sufficient balance exists within the Economic Development Committee Fund to provide $15,000 to the Milwaukee Jobs Initiative; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee that the Economic Development Committee Fund provide $15,000 to the Milwaukee Jobs Initiative to support continued development and operation of its worker training and placement program; and, be it
Further Resolved, That a representative of the Milwaukee Jobs Initiative be asked to appear before the Economic Development Committee to report on the progress of the project no later than November, 1998.
