Substitute resolution designating a Motorcycle Safety Awareness Week in Milwaukee.
Analysis
This resolution designates the first week in May of each year, commencing May 2014, as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Week in Milwaukee to promote motorcycle safety on the city's streets and highways.
Body
Whereas, Safety is the highest priority for the highways and streets of the City of Milwaukee; and
Whereas, The City of Milwaukee desires to be a leader in motorcycle safety, education and awareness; and
Whereas, It is especially meaningful that the residents of the City to be aware of motorcycles on the roadways and recognize the importance of motorcycle safety; and
Whereas, Over the years 2010-2012, the number of motorcycle-related accidents in Milwaukee was as follows:

Whereas, In 2012, 116 motorcyclists were killed statewide in accidents; and
Whereas, The number of accidents in the state increased 10% from 2011 to 2012, from 2,574 accidents to 2,837 accidents; and
Whereas, Forty three Wisconsin riders were killed in motorcycle accidents through July 2013, and several more motorcycle accidents have been reported thus far in August in Milwaukee alone; and
Whereas, A community group has initiated an online petition calling for a Motorcycle Safety Awareness Day to promote motorcycle safety in Milwaukee in honor of Vinencia Dawson who was killed in a motorcycle accident on June 30, 2013; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the first week in May of each year, commencing May 2014, is designated as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Week; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Department of Public Works, in conjunction with the Police Department, shall be responsible for promoting the Motorcycle Safety Awareness Week; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Common Council urges all motorists to "share the road" with each other and join in the effort to improve safety and awareness on the city's streets and highways.
