Analysis
This resolution recognizes October 1-8, 2026, as Week Without Driving in the City of Milwaukee and encourages City employees and residents to participate by reducing or eliminating driving for some or all trips and reflecting on the transportation barriers experienced by people who do not drive.
Body
Whereas, Week Without Driving is a national initiative intended to raise awareness of the experiences and transportation challenges faced by people who do not drive; and
Whereas, People may be unable to drive because of age, disability, financial circumstances, access to a vehicle, or other factors; and
Whereas, Access to reliable transportation affects a person’s ability to reach employment, health care, education, grocery stores, public services, and other essential destinations; and
Whereas, Participating in Week Without Driving provides an opportunity to better understand the time, cost, accessibility, safety, and other challenges that nondrivers may encounter while traveling throughout the community; and
Whereas, Greater awareness of these experiences can help inform efforts to create a transportation system that is safe, accessible, and responsive to the needs of all Milwaukee residents; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that October 1-8, 2026, is recognized as Week Without Driving in the City of Milwaukee; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Common Council encourages City employees and Milwaukee residents to participate in Week Without Driving by reducing or eliminating driving for some or all trips, using alternative forms of transportation when feasible, and reflecting on the barriers experienced by people who do not have the option to drive.
