Resolution authorizing the Milwaukee Police Department to continue participation with Milwaukee County in the operation of a Crime Victim Crisis Intervention Project. (Police)

- Analysis -

This resolution authorizes the Milwaukee Police Department to continue participation with the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office in the operation of a Crime Victim Crisis Intervention Project, funded by a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Office of Crime Victims' Services.
BODY:
Whereas, The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office has accepted a continuing grant from the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Office of Crime Victims' Services, to establish and operate a Crime Victim Crisis Intervention Project in Milwaukee County; and

Whereas, Other jurisdictions around the country provide services to victims, witnesses and their families immediately after the commission of a crime, but the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office does not provide such services until after cases are reviewed for criminal charges; and

Whereas, Under the Crime Victim Crisis Intervention Project, the District Attorney's Office and the Milwaukee Police Department would work together to provide services to crime victims and witnesses immediately after the commission of a crime to improve the quality of victim/witness services and enhance cooperation between crime victims and police and prosecution agencies; and

Whereas, A Victim/Witness Specialist, under the direction of the police official in charge of an investigation, will respond to the scene of a crime or death notification to provide crisis intervention services, short term counseling, and emotional support to crime victims and their families; and

Whereas, The intent of this project is to demonstrate the kinds of services needed by crime victims and witnesses immediately after a crime has been committed, identify the state resources required for a full scale Crisis Intervention Unit in Milwaukee, and determine whether crisis intervention services enhance cooperation between crime victims and police and prosecution agencies; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Milwaukee Police Department is authorized to continue participation with the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office in the operation of a Crime Victim Crisis Intervention Project.
