- ANALYSIS - This resolution authorizes the Commissioner of Public Works to sell used public works equipment such as old police call boxes and traffic signals to the Wisconsin Center District Board so that they may be incorporated into a public art piece to be installed adjacent to the new convention center.
 
 
BODY:
Whereas, The City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works holds in storage various used public works artifacts such as old police call boxes, traffic signal heads, and original harp lights; and
 
Whereas, Most of these artifacts are no longer functional but do have some historic value; and
 
Whereas, It would be desirable to place some of the most attractive and historically significant of these artifacts on public display in an appropriate setting; and
 
Whereas, The Wisconsin Center has engaged an artist who specializes in using old public works equipment in her works; and
 
Whereas, This artist has requested several specific pieces of public works equipment for her proposed Wisconsin Center piece including an old fire hydrant, four original harp lights, a police call box, a fire call box, an old traffic signal, and a traffic control box; and
 
Whereas, The City's Art Commission has reviewed the artist's request and has determined that it would be appropriate for the City to cooperate; now, therefore, be it
 
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee that the Commissioner of Public Works is hereby authorized to sell to the Wisconsin Center Board the requested public works artifacts for incorporation into an art piece to be erected along the North 4th Street side of the new Midwest Express Convention Hall; and be it
 
Further Resolved; That the Commissioner shall establish a reasonable price for the artifacts recognizing that the equipment will be placed on public display and will thereby provide lasting value to the citizens of Milwaukee.
