Title

Resolution relating to acceptance and funding of a 2025 Wisconsin Department of Justice Gunshot Location Technology Program grant.

Analysis

This resolution authorizes the Milwaukee Police Department to accept and fund a 2025 Gunshot Location Technology Program grant from the Wisconsin Department of Justice in the amount of $175,000 with a city share of $0 and a grantor share of $175,000.  The purpose of the grant is to support use of gunshot detection and location technology to alert MPD when and where gunshots are fired within the coverage area to enable rapid deployment and law enforcement response.  Gunshot detection allows for immediate, accurate, and cost-effective investigation of shots fired to address public safety. 

Body

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee appears to be eligible for grant funds from the Wisconsin Department of Justice to support use of gunshot detection and location technology to alert MPD when and where gunshots are fired within the coverage area to enable rapid deployment and law enforcement response; and

 

Whereas, The operation of this grant from 11/1/2024 to 6/30/2025 would cost $175,000 of which, $0 would be provided by the city and $175,000 (100%) would be provided by the grantor; now therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee that the Police Department shall accept this grant without further approval unless the terms of the grant change as indicated in Section 304-81, of the Milwaukee Code of Ordinances; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That the City Comptroller is authorized to:

 

1.  Commit funds within the Project/Grant Parent of the 2024 Special Revenue - Grant and Aid Projects the following amounts for the program/project titled 2025 Gunshot Location Technology Program Grant:

Further Resolved, That these funds are budgeted for the Police Department, which is authorized to:

 

1.                     Expend from the amount budgeted for specified purposes as indicated in the grant

budget and incur costs consistent with the award date;

 

2.                     Transfer funds within the project budget as long as the amount expended for each

specific purpose does not exceed the amount authorized by the budget by 10 percent.
