This resolution authorizes and directs the Central Board of Purchases to issue requests for proposals as part of a study of the feasibility of permitting advertisement on and sponsorship of public property and facilities.
Body
Whereas, The City of Milwaukee is always ready to consider new and innovative ways to generate revenue that place no additional burden on City taxpayers; and
Whereas, Communities throughout the country have made use of public property and facilities to raise money both by authorizing advertising on them and by encouraging private sponsorship of them; and
Whereas, Such efforts have included, but have not been limited to, advertising on public vehicles and municipal web sites as well as sponsorship of tot lots and "gateway" boulevards; and
Whereas, The members of the Common Council must always be careful to balance the desire for new revenue with the need to protect the appearance, character and dignity of the City as a whole; and
Whereas, As a preliminary step, the Central Board of Purchases has suggested the issuance of requests for proposals to better gauge the interest and quality of responses the City would likely receive were it to authorize the advertisement on or sponsorship of public property and facilities; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Common Council authorizes and directs the Central Board of Purchases to issue requests for proposals to assist in the study of the feasibility of permitting the sponsorship of and the advertisement on public property and facilities; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Central Board of Purchases is directed to report to the Common Council concerning its findings in this matter within 90 days of the date of adoption of this resolution.
