Analysis
This resolution authorizes the Commissioner of Pubic Works to provide connectivity at the expense of and for the use and benefit of the Milwaukee Area Technical College, WMVS/WMVT, Channels 10&36.
 
This installation will facilitate connectivity of MATC and WMVS/WMVT to the Department of Transportation traffic safety related information and freeway camera transmissions for the purpose of developing travel television programming.  The installation would also provide the capability to connect MATC to the University of Wisconsin (UWM) and Internet 2.
 
Body
 
Whereas, The City of Milwaukee wishes to promote access to weather and traffic safety related information and to enhance educational resources. This will provide MATC and WMVS/WMVT   entry into the Abilene/Internet2 community to expand Milwaukee Public Television and Milwaukee Area Technical College's presence within the education community; and
 
Whereas, Internet2 is a consortium being led by 202 universities working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet. Internet2 is recreating the partnership among academia, industry and government that fostered today's Internet in its infancy; and
 
Whereas, The WMVS-TV Channel 10, and WMVT-TV Channel 36, are not-for-profit, educational and public television stations, established to serve, inform, educate and improve the quality of life of the people in the eleven counties of southeastern Wisconsin with exceptional quality television programming; and
 
Whereas, WMVS-TV Channel 10 and WMVT-TV Channel 36, have been actively involved in development of high definition (HD) programming and in research concerning transport of high data rate program files via the Internet; and
 
Whereas, The City of Milwaukee can provide connectivity that would be beneficial to the extension and enhancement of Milwaukee public television to further its mission and to continue bringing high quality, educational programming; and
 
Whereas, It would be in the best interests of the City of Milwaukee to facilitate connectivity within the City for WMVS-TV Channel 10 and WMVT-TV Channel 36; now, therefore, be it
 
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Commissioner of Public Works is authorized and directed to provide connectivity at no cost to the City of Milwaukee that would be beneficial to the extension and enhancement of public television programming of WMVS-TV Channel 10 and WMVT-TV Channel 36.
