A resolution expressing the City of Milwaukee’s support for a Green Alert system to provide information about missing at-risk veterans.
Analysis
This resolution expresses the City’s support for the Corey Adams Searchlight Act, which creates a Green Alert system for providing information about missing at-risk veterans. This resolution also urges the Wisconsin Legislature to vote in favor of the legislation.
Body
Whereas, According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 20 veterans commit suicide each day; and
Whereas, While veterans make up less than 9% of the U.S. population, they account for 19% of all suicides in America; and
Whereas, Enlisting the aid of the public and law enforcement in locating a missing veteran could greatly improve the chances of the veteran’s safe return and ensure that the at-risk veteran receives any help or support he or she might need; and
Whereas, A bipartisan group of Wisconsin legislators have proposed the Corey Adams Searchlight Act, named for a Milwaukee Air Force Veteran who passed away in 2017 after going missing for 18 days; and
Whereas, Under the Corey Adams Searchlight Act, a “Green Alert” could be issued in Wisconsin for a missing at-risk veteran, similar to an Amber Alert issued for a missing child or a Silver Alert issued for a missing senior citizen; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the City supports the Corey Adams Searchlight Act, which creates a Green Alert system for providing information about missing at-risk veterans; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the City urges all members of the Wisconsin Legislature to recognize the importance of using every available resource to find missing at-risk veterans and to, therefore, vote in favor of the Corey Adams Searchlight Act; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the City Clerk shall send copies of this resolution to all members of the Wisconsin Legislature representing Milwaukee.
