Title

Resolution relating to the creation of a Bronzeville Safety and Traffic Task Force.

Analysis

The resolution creates a Bronzeville Safety and Traffic Task Force. The Task Force is charged with reviewing traffic and other safety concerns in the area bounded by W. North Ave., W. Walnut St., N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. and Interstate 43, known collectively as Bronzeville, and making recommendations for improvements to the Common Council.

 

The Taskforce shall consist of:

 

1. A representative of the Police Department, appointed by the Chief of Police.

2. The staff person in the Office of the Mayor responsible for the “Vision Zero” initiative, appointed by the Mayor.

3. The Director of Emergency Management and Communications or designee.

4. The Commissioner of the Department of City Development or designee.

5. The Commissioner of the Department of Public Works or designee.

6. A staff person in the Office of Violence Prevention, appointed by the Commissioner of Health.

7. 3 stakeholders from the Bronzeville area; one to be appointed by the by the Mayor, and 2, by the President of the Common Council.

8. 2 residents of the Bronzeville neighborhood, appointed by the Common Council member representing the 6th Aldermanic District.

 

In addition, the Task Force shall be staffed by the City Clerk’s Office. Finally, the Task Force shall present a report to the Common Council on its findings within 6 months of adoption of the resolution.

 

Body

Whereas, The Bronzeville District is a City of Milwaukee redevelopment initiative inspired by Milwaukee’s original Bronzeville District of the early- to mid-1900’s; and

 

Whereas, The primary African-American economic and social hub of its time, Bronzeville, brought all ethnicities together to celebrate African-American culture; and

 

Whereas, The 21st-century Bronzeville initiative strives to revitalize an area of Milwaukee where African-American culture has been a mainstay; and

 

Whereas, The Bronzeville area has attracted substantial investment and attention since the creation of the district; and

 

Whereas, Despite these positive developments, the district, like many of Milwaukee’s neighborhoods still struggles with the consequences of decades of disinvestment, neglect, segregation and discrimination; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that a Bronzeville Safety and Traffic Task Force is created consisting of:

 

1. A representative of the Police Department, appointed by the Chief of Police.

2. The staff person in the Office of the Mayor responsible for the “Vision Zero” initiative, appointed by the Mayor.

3. The Director of Emergency Management and Communications or designee.

4. The Commissioner of the Department of City Development or designee.

5. The Commissioner of the Department of Public Works or designee.

6. A staff person in the Office of Violence Prevention, appointed by the Commissioner of Health.

6. 3 stakeholders from the Bronzeville area; one to be appointed by the by the Mayor, and 2, by the President of the Common Council.

Further Resolved, That the Bronzeville Safety and Traffic Task Force is charged with making recommendations to the Common Council on how to enhance traffic safety and public safety within the Bronzeville area, consisting of the area bounded by W. North Ave., W. Walnut St., N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. and Interstate 43; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That the Bronzeville Safety and Traffic Task Force shall report its findings to the Common Council, within 6 months of the date of adoption of this resolution; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That the City Clerk’s Office shall provide staffing support to the Task Force; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That all City departments are directed to support and cooperate with the work of the Bronzeville Safety and Traffic Task Force.
