Resolution supporting the National School Walkout and the March for Our Lives rally, and urging legislative initiatives to address gun violence.

 

Analysis

Under this this resolution, the Youth Council urges the Common Council to support the National School Walkout Day on March 14, 2018 and March for Our Lives rally on March 24, 2018, both being held in protest of gun violence.

 

The Youth Council further urges the Common Council to support the passage of federal and state  legislative  initiatives  to  protect  students  from  gun  violence  based  on  the  following principles:

 

1.        Teachers should not be coerced to be armed.

2.                     Prevent  gun  ownership  by  individuals  with  mental  illness  or  a  history  of  domestic violence.

3.        Restrict the sale of guns to individuals under the age of 21.

4.        Increase student access to mental health resources.

 

Body

Whereas, The National School Walkout calls upon students, teachers, school administrators, parents and supporters to walk out of school for 17 minutes at 10 a.m. across every time zone

on March 14, 2018, in protest of gun violence plaguing schools; and

 

Whereas, The National School Walkout will be held in memory of the victims who lost their lives to gun violence in school shootings; and

 

Whereas, Hundreds of thousands of students and faculty across the country are expected to participate in the National School Walkout; and

 

Whereas, Students should be encouraged to exercise their right to free speech and protest as teens nationwide plan to walk out of classes on the National School Walkout Day; and

 

Whereas, March for Our Lives is a movement dedicated to student-led activism to end gun violence and to keep students safe from gun violence; and

 

Whereas, March for Our Lives will hold a rally on March 24, 2018 in Washington, D.C.; and

 

Whereas, The Youth Council of the City of Milwaukee believes that schools should allow students to peacefully assemble outside of school grounds to protest of gun violence without the fear of disciplinary action; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Youth Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Youth Council urges the Common Council to support the National School Walkout planned to be held on March 14, 2018, as well as the March for Our Lives rally on March 24, 2018 and to call upon schools to recognize the walkout and avoid disciplining students who participate in the walkout; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That the Youth Council urges the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee to support the passage of federal and state legislative initiatives to protect students from gun violence based on the following principles:
