Body

Whereas, The Milwaukee Police Department has initiated a proactive directed patrol initiative designed to reduce the levels of crime and calls for service experienced in the City of Milwaukee; and

Whereas, The Milwaukee Police Department began this “Neighborhood Safety Initiative” on Sunday, May 20, 2007, to conclude on Saturday, September 8, 2007 comprised of uniform beat patrol personnel concentrating on field interviews of suspicious subjects and engaging in positive citizen contacts and uniform squad patrol personnel concentrating on traffic stops and field interviews of suspicious subjects in identified target areas; and

Whereas, Quality of life issues which have an adverse impact upon neighborhoods will be aggressively enforced; and

Whereas, The “Neighborhood Safety Initiative” will be staffed with initiative specific personnel requiring additional salary funds to ensure the initiative’s success along with providing for necessary district patrol staffing; and

Whereas, The Milwaukee Police Department will evaluate the impact of the “Neighborhood Safety Initiative” and report its findings to the Common Council following its conclusion; and

Whereas, The Department of Public Works is responsible for clearing snow and ice from city streets in a timely fashion to ensure public safety and the operability of the city’s transportation network; and

Whereas, More than 46 inches of snowfall fell between January and April of 2007, compared to average snowfall of 29.6 inches during the same time periods in 2000 through 2006, resulting in thirty-six snow and ice control operations year-to-date; and

Whereas, The Department of Public Works has spent more for snow and ice control to date than was budgeted for 2007; and

Whereas, Expenditure needs for snow removal in November and December is uncertain; and

Whereas, the Department will require additional resources to remove snow and ice in November and December in the event of a normal to above average winter; now, there be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that up to $1,975,000 from the Common Council Contingent Fund (#0001-9990-C001-006300) (2007) be reserved for the Police Department account (#0001-3310-R999-006000) (2007) if necessary; and be it

Further Resolved, That up to $650,000 from the Common Council Contingent Fund (#0001-9990-C001-006300) (2007) be reserved for the Department of Public Works Operations Division Account (#0001-5450-R999-006000) (2007) if necessary; and be it

Further Resolved, That up to $350,000 from the Common Council Contingent Fund (#0001-9990-C001-006300) (2007) be reserved for the Department of Public Works Operations Division Account (#0001-5450-R999-006300) (2007) if necessary.
