Title

Substitute resolution establishing a sister city relationship between the City of Milwaukee and Kragujevac, Serbia.

Analysis

This resolution establishes a sister city relationship between the City of Milwaukee and Kragujevac, Serbia. This sister city relationship shall expire after 5 years unless extended for another 5 years by Common Council resolution. 

 

Body

Whereas, The Common Council created the Sister Cities Committee to assist in the establishment and maintenance of sister city relationships pursuant to Sister Cities International guidelines; and

 

Whereas, The Sister Cities Committee reviews requests for new relationships, investigates and makes recommendations to the Common Council concerning the establishment of new relationships and the maintenance or termination of existing sister city relationships; and

 

Whereas, The Sister Cities Committee has reviewed the application of Kragujevac, Serbia, and recommends that a sister city relationship be established pursuant to ch. 335 of the Code; and

 

Whereas, Kragujevac is is an important economic and cultural center of Serbia, the fourth largest city in Serbia and the administrative capital and historic center of the Sumadija region; and

Whereas, Kragujevac is a hub for diverse industries producing automobiles, machinery, and textiles; and

Whereas, Kragujevac is renowned for its prestigious educational institutions and cultural and historic landmarks; and

Whereas, The sister city relationship between the City of Milwaukee and Kragujevac, Serbia will benefit both cities by fostering cultural and artistic exchange, providing opportunities for local manufacturers to expand trade, and fostering collaboration between both cities’ vibrant creative industries; and

 

Whereas, The sister city relationship will receive local support through the local nonprofit sponsor St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Cathedral and its Milwaukee/Kragujevac Sister City Committee; and

 

Whereas, The sister city relationship will also receive support in Kragujevac, Serbia, through the City of Kragujevac; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the establishment of a sister city relationship between the City of Milwaukee and Kragujevac, Serbia, is authorized; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That the appropriate City officials are directed to execute an agreement between the City of Milwaukee and Kragujevac, Serbia, to formalize the sister city relationship, and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That this sister city relationship shall expire after 5 years unless extended for another 5 years by Common Council resolution.
