Title

Substitute motion renewing charter school contracts for Central City Cyberschool and Downtown Montessori Academy, Inc., for an additional 5-year term.

Analysis

This motion authorizes the renewal of charter school contracts for another 5-year term beginning on the 2008-2009 school year and ending on the 2012-2013 school year for the Central City Cyberschool and Downtown Montessori Academy, Inc., as recommended by the Charter School Review Committee.  The motion also approves the proposed charter school contracts attached to this file and directs the proper City officials to execute the contracts.

Body

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee Common Council is authorized under s. 118.40(2r), Wis. Stats., to establish and monitor the operation of charter schools; and

 

Whereas, The Common Council has empowered the Charter School Review Committee to make recommendations to the Council regarding charter schools; and

 

Whereas, The Common Council has approved 7 charter schools under its auspices to date; and

 

Whereas, Two of the 7 charter schools are requesting renewal of their 5-year charter term; and

 

Whereas, The Charter School Review Committee at its meeting of December 12, 2007, voted unanimously to recommend to the Milwaukee Common Council renewal - for another 5-year term - the charter for Central City Cyberschool; and

 

Whereas, The Charter School Review Committee at its meeting of December 12, 2007, voted unanimously to recommend to the Milwaukee Common Council renewal - for another 5-year term -the charter for Downtown Montessori Academy, Inc.; now, therefore

 

It is moved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Milwaukee Common Council renews the charter - for another 5-year term - for the Central City Cyberschool beginning on the 2008-2009 school year and ending on the 2012-2013 school year; and

 

It is further moved, That the Milwaukee Common Council renews the charter - for another 5-year term - for the Downtown Montessori Academy, Inc., beginning on the 2008-2009 school year and ending on the 2012-2013 school year; and

 

It is further moved, That the Common Council approves the proposed charter school contracts submitted by the City Attorney and directs the appropriate City officials to execute the contracts substantially in the form attached to this file, with such revisions as may be required by the City Attorney.
