Title
Resolution authorizing the acceptance of a bequest from the estate of Paula M. Gorde.
Analysis
This resolution authorizes the Police Department to accept a bequest of $50,000 from the estate of Paula M. Gorde.  Paula M.Gorde was a resident of the 8th Aldermanic District, worked for 40 years as a Spanish language interpreter, operated a tavern, and provided shelter to abused women and their children from the neighborhood.  
 
The $50,000 bequest that Paula M. Gorde has left to the Police Department is for the purchase of a fully-equipped police vehicle in honor of her late husband, Christ Gorde, Sr.  Mr. Gorde, Sr. was a member of the U. S. Army 101st Airborne Division and a prisoner of war during World War II.
Body
Whereas, Section 304-21 of the Code of Ordinances regulates the receipt, appropriation and expenditure of contributions received to the City; and
 
Whereas, Paula M. Gorde was a resident of the 8th Aldermanic District and worked for 40 years as a Spanish language interpreter, was a block watch captain in her South Side neighborhood and provided shelter to abused women and their children from the neighborhood; and    
 
Whereas, Paula M. Gorde and her husband, Christ Gorde, Sr. owned and operated Paula's Tavern located at S. 25th and W. Scott Streets; and
 
Whereas, Mr. Gorde, Sr. was a member of the U. S. Army 101st Airborne Division and a prisoner of war during World War II; and
 
Whereas, Paula M. Gorde willed $50,000 of her estate to the Police Department for the purchase of a fully-equipped police vehicle in honor of her late husband, Christ Gorde, Sr; now, therefore, be it
 
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Police Department is authorized to accept this bequest; and, be it
 
Further Resolved, At the time the funds are released to the City, the Paula M. Gorde bequest shall be directly deposited into the appropriate Police Department account; and, be it
 
Further Resolved, That the appropriate City officers are directed to establish the necessary subaccounts in accordance with generally accepted accounting practices and City guidelines necessary to maintain the fiscal control to carry out the intent and purpose of this resolution; and, be it
 
Further Resolved, That the Common Council expresses its condolences to the family and friends of Paula M. Gorde and its sincere appreciation for this bequest.
