Title

Substitute resolution approving a contract between the City of Milwaukee and Chenhalls Nissen, S.C. for legal services relating to securing an employment-based nonimmigrant visa for a Health Department employee.

Analysis

This resolution approves and authorizes the City to enter into a contract for legal services with the law firm of Chenhalls Nissen, S.C., to advise and provide counsel to the City in relation to securing an employment-based nonimmigrant visa for a noncitizen candidate to work in the Health Department. The law firm of Chenhalls Nissen has a twenty year history of helping medical professionals in obtaining employment-based visas.

Whereas, Section 304-23 of the Code of Ordinances allows the Common Council to authorize retention of a law firm outside the City Attorney’s permanent staff, pursuant to a written agreement; and

Whereas, The Health Department seeks to hire the noncitizen candidate for the position of Assistant Laboratory Director; and

Whereas, the noncitizen candidate requires an employment-based nonimmigrant visa prior to being able to work for the City; and

Whereas, The Health Department intends to fund the legal services of Chenhalls Nissen, S.C., and all associated visa fees with grant money from MHD Account Number 63400; and

Whereas, The City desires to retain Chenhalls Nissen, S.C., to secure an employment-based nonimmigrant visa for noncitizen candidate now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the City Attorney and appropriate City officers are authorized to execute a Contract for Legal Services between the City, Chenhalls Nissen, S.C., and the noncitizen candidate which is attached to this file, or one in substantial conformity therewith and to be approved by the City Attorney, and to take the steps necessary and required by the Contract for Legal Services.
