- Analysis -
This ordinance changes the name of East Scott Street, between South Lincoln Memorial Drive and South Harbor Drive, to East Jones Street.
BODY:
Whereas, East Scott Street, between South Lincoln Memorial Drive and South Harbor Drive, is located in the peninsula-shaped industrial area known as Jones Island; and
Whereas, Jones Island is named after James Monroe Jones, who built ships on this sandy peninsula between 1854 and 1858 and helped make Milwaukee a major Great Lakes shipbuilding center and port; and
Whereas, In addition to being a hub of shipbuilding activity, Jones Island became a unique multi-ethnic fishing village that played a significant role in Milwaukee's history; and
Whereas, By changing the name of East Scott Street to East Jones Street, the City can recognize the contributions of James Monroe Jones and commemorate the Jones Island community, as well; and
Whereas, The segment of East Scott Street that is between South Lincoln Memorial Drive and South Harbor Drive is not connected to any other segment of Scott Street, thereby eliminating any potential for confusion resulting from such a name change; now, therefore
The Mayor and Common Council of the City of Milwaukee do ordain as follows:
Part 1. The name of East Scott Street, between South Lincoln Memorial Drive and South Harbor Drive, in the 14th Aldermanic District, is changed to East Jones Street.
Part 2. This ordinance is passed notwithstanding the provisions of s. 113-3 of the Milwaukee code.
