Analysis

To implement provisions of the 2017 budget, this charter ordinance:

 

1. Reduces the number of municipal court judges from 3 to 2. 

Body

The Mayor and Common Council of the City of Milwaukee do ordain as follows:

 

Part 1. Section 3-34-2 of the charter is amended to read:

 

3-34. Municipal Court.

 

2. MUNICIPAL JUDGE. Pursuant to the authority of s. 755.01, Wis. Stats., there are created [[3]] 2 offices of municipal judge of the city of Milwaukee, which shall be designated [[branch one, branch 2 and branch 3]] branch one and branch 2.

 

Part 2. Section 3-34-4-b of the charter is amended to read:

 

3-34. Municipal Court.

 

4. OFFICERS AND STAFF.

 

b. Municipal Court Staff. In addition to the [[3 municipal court judges, the court commissioners]] 2 municipal court judges and the chief court administrator, the municipal court staff shall include such municipal court clerks as are authorized by the common council, to be appointed by the chief court administrator from civil service lists submitted for that purpose, said clerks to remain in the classified city civil service. The staff shall further include police officers designated by the chief of police who shall serve as bailiffs, and such additional administrative and clerical staff selected through the usual procedures of the city civil service, as authorized by the common council.

 

 

 

 

Part 3. This is a charter ordinance and shall take effect 60 days after its passage and publication, unless within such 60 days a referendum petition is filed as provided in s. 66.0101(5), Wis. Stats., in which event this ordinance shall not take effect until submitted to a referendum and approved by a majority of the electors voting thereon.
