Title
Resolution directing the Department of Public Works to install an historical marker indicating the former location of Lutheran High School.
 
Analysis
This resolution authorizes and directs the Department of Public Works to install an historical marker on the grounds of the Milwaukee Fire Department Engine Company #5 near the intersection of North 13th Street and West Reservoir Avenue, indicating the former location of Lutheran High School.  Operated at that location from 1904 through 1959, Lutheran was the oldest continuously-operated community Lutheran high school in the country and gave birth to both Milwaukee Lutheran High School and Wisconsin Lutheran High School.
The cost of the marker and its installation will be borne by Milwaukee Lutheran High School and Wisconsin Lutheran High School.

Whereas, Lutheran High School, which stood near the corner of North 13th Street and West Reservoir Avenue from 1904 through 1959, was once the oldest, continuously-operated community Lutheran high school in America; and
 
Whereas, Lutheran High School gave birth to both Milwaukee Lutheran High School and Wisconsin Lutheran High School, 2 institutions with a long record of service to the entire Milwaukee community; and
 
Whereas, The centennial anniversary of the founding of Lutheran High School will be commemorated in 2004; and
 
Whereas, The former location of Lutheran High School is now on a site used by the Milwaukee Fire Department's Engine Company #5; and
 
Whereas, Milwaukee Lutheran High School and Wisconsin Lutheran High School wish to erect a marker on that site to commemorate the centennial anniversary of Lutheran High School and have offered to pay for the marker, its installation and its maintenance; and
 
Whereas, The Milwaukee Fire Department has expressed its support for this proposal; now, therefore, be it
 
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Commissioner of Public Works is authorized and directed to install a marker commemorating the centennial anniversary of Lutheran High School on the grounds of Engine Company #5, provided all costs therefore are paid by Milwaukee Lutheran High School and Wisconsin Lutheran High School.
