This motion approves the revocation of the charter of the Maasai Institute and termination of the City of Milwaukee’s charter school contract with the Maasai Institute.

Body

Whereas, The Common Council adopted Common Council File Number 040968 on February 1, 2005, authorizing the Maasai Institute to operate a Milwaukee Common Council charter school, as recommended by the Charter School Review Committee, and directed the appropriate City officials to execute a charter school contract with the Maasai Institute; and

 

Whereas, On June 19, 2008, the Charter School Review Committee held a public hearing to investigate the operations, fiscal status and performance of the Maasai Institute and to consider the possible termination of the Maasai Institute charter contract and revocation of its charter; and

 

Whereas, At this public hearing, the Maasai Institute presented to the Charter School Review Committee a document setting forth the charter school’s efforts to continue school operations and concluding that the school would be financially  unable to continue its operations through the end of the 2008-2009 school term and must therefore close; and

 

Whereas, The Charter School Review Committee, agreed with the Maasai Institute’s decision that the school must close and also agreed to provide direction regarding the appropriate steps to take in closing the school; now, therefore,

 

It is moved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Common Council approves agreement for the revocation of the charter of the Maasai Institute and termination of the City of Milwaukee’s charter school contract with the Maasai Institute, a copy of which is attached to this file, and directs the appropriate City officials to execute the agreement on behalf of the City.
