This resolution expresses Common Council approval for relocating the Henry Bergh statue from the Humane Society property on North Humboldt Avenue to a new site on Historic Layton Boulevard. The statue shall not be moved until 1999, after reconstruction of the boulevard is completed, and the site and placement of the statue shall be selected with the cooperation and input of the Historic Layton Boulevard Association.
BODY:
Whereas, A bronze statue of Henry Bergh, founder of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was placed in Market Square and given to the City by the Wisconsin Humane Society in 1891; and
 
Whereas, The statue was moved to the grounds of the Wisconsin Humane Society shelter on North Humboldt Avenue in 1967, under the authority of Common Council Resolution File Number 67-406, and it remains at that site today; and
 
Whereas, The Humane Society is moving from the North Humboldt Avenue site and the statue needs to be relocated; and
 
Whereas, Milwaukee's statue is the only statue of Henry Bergh in the United States and it is appropriate to relocate this statue, with the recommendation of the Arts Board and the cooperation and input of the Historic Layton Boulevard Association, to Historic Layton Boulevard; now, therefore, be it
 
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Common Council approves relocation of the Henry Bergh statue to a site on Historic Layton Boulevard; and, be it
 
Further Resolved, That the statue shall not be moved to its new home until 1999, after the reconstruction of Historic Layton Boulevard has been completed; and, be it
 
Further Resolved, That the new site and placement of the statue shall be selected with the cooperation and input of the Historic Layton Boulevard Association.
