This resolution approves the HaRUNbee 5K Walk/Run for Healthy Birth Outcomes as part of Bronzeville Week 2018.

Body

Whereas, The Bronzeville Cultural and Entertainment District, located in the area bounded by Center Street, Garfield Avenue, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and 7th Street, is a redevelopment initiative seeking to create economic development and vibrancy in this neighborhood; and

 

Whereas, The 6th annual Bronzeville Week celebration of African-American culture, history, art and entertainment will take place August 4 - 11, 2018; and

 

Whereas, In conjunction with Bronzeville Week, United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County and the Milwaukee Lifecourse Initiative for Healthy Families have organized the HaRUNbee 5K Walk/Run for Healthy Birth Outcomes, which will occur on the morning of Saturday, August 4th, starting and ending at the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Drive and North Avenue; and

 

Whereas, The HaRUNbee Walk/Run seeks to raise awareness of and to prevent infant mortality, a problem that disproportionately affects Milwaukee’s African-American community; and

 

Whereas, According to its organizers, the HaRUNbee Walk/Run also strives to promote community wellness by encouraging families to stay healthy and fit, both physically and mentally; and

 

Whereas, HaRUNbee will allow residents of Milwaukee, from both within and outside of the Harambee community, to come together and participate in a 5K walk/run in an effort to increase infant mortality awareness and education; and

 

Whereas, Promoting wellness and encouraging communities to eat healthier and exercise more will reduce the risk of infant mortality in Milwaukee; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Common Council approves the HaRUNbee 5K Walk/Run for Healthy Birth Outcomes as part of Bronzeville Week 2018; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That the Common Council calls upon public and private healthcare providers,  and community organizations, to promote health and wellness and the awareness of infant mortality in Milwaukee; and be it

 

Further Resolved, That the Common Council urges all city residents, businesses and community groups to join in the effort to work together to eliminate racial disparities in birth outcomes and ensure more babies are born healthy and reach their first birthday.
