This resolution expresses the City of Milwaukee's support for passage of 2005 Wisconsin Senate Bill 148, an act relating to the registration of firearms in Milwaukee County requiring individuals who reside in Milwaukee County and who own a firearm to report to the Wisconsin's Department of Justice (DOJ) their name and address, the manufacture, model, and serial number of the firearm and any other identifying characteristic of the firearm specified by DOJ.
Body
Whereas, Firearm-related criminal activity continues to plague many neighborhoods in the City of Milwaukee; and
Whereas, Wisconsin Senate Bill 148, an act requiring an individual who resides in Milwaukee County and who owns a firearm to report to the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) his/her name and address, the manufacture, model, and serial number of the firearm, and any other identifying characteristic of the firearm specified by the DOJ, could be used in the effort to reduce firearm-related criminal activity; and
Whereas, The registration would apply to handguns, rifles, shotguns and machine guns, but not to firearms designed to fire loose black power, firearms manufactured before 1899, or firearms that cannot be fired or readily restored to firing condition; and
Whereas, The DOJ would maintain a registry of this firearm information and would keep information in the registry confidential, except the DOJ may release the information to law enforcement agencies that are investigating a crime that involves a firearm;
now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Department of Administration-Intergovernmental Relations Division is directed to lobby for passage of Senate Bill 148.
