Subject: Mural Ordinance

I would like to express my objection to Alderman Zilenski's proposed ordinance requiring a permit process and regulations for painted murals.  There are many in Riverwest including a garage in my alley which are not graffiti.  Some of the murals were created by very good artists, and the ordinance would mean they would most likely all get painting over.  That would take away the 'arty' feeling of Riverwest which is one of it's charms. As a home owner I do not object to them.  It could even affect the murals Woodland Pattern has on it's building that are done by professional artists.  Milwaukee needs to focus on real issues rather then waste time stomping on art.  I don't know anything about District 14 - if they are more conservative or if it's a problem in his area it's too bad he can't confine an ordinance just to his area instead of proposing something that would affect our (Riverwest's) identity.
