Stamper, Coggs, and Rainey, I contacted you last week, as members of the Zoning Committee, to enlist your support for my effort to convince the Bucks to make a much greater commitment to solar power in the arena complex. As I’ve said to your aides, I understand the train has left the station, and my colleagues and I have been chasing it down the track, trying to get the engineer’s attention. In the six week since it occurred to me that something could be accomplished on this issue, I have enlisted the obvious leaders on global warming, 350.org, and we’ve gotten support from solar power advocacy groups Midwest Renewable Energy Assoc. and Renew Wisconsin. But we have not had time to build a coalition with other environmental groups or within Milwaukee’s African American and Latino/a communities. Still, as a lifelong advocate for minority rights as well as an environmentalist, even without yet forming a local coalition, I’m willing to say what I stated in my previous email to you: Could an increased solar commitment be beneficial to our African American community? If we do not fight off climate change, it will impact ALL of us, especially underserved communities. And maybe solar power at the Bucks complex can be a catalyst for solar manufacturing and construction jobs for workers of color in MKE. Don’t worry, this won’t scare the Bucks away, but we can persuade them to act more responsibly. We look forward to your participation at the Zoning meeting. Sincerely, Larry Hoffman Sustainability Committee, 350.org Milwaukee
