To: Historic
Preservation Commission
From: Randy Bryant
I am currently in New York on business
and regret that I am unable to attend the special meeting of the Historic
Preservation Commission on Tuesday, December 11, 2012. I have always
stated that historic preservation should integrate the desires of the community.
Over the last eighteen (18) months there has been a significant amount of
time and energy devoted to improving our current thirty (30) year ordinance,
which has served us reasonably well. Evidence of this is reflected in the
high regard for Milwaukee's historic environment being among the best in the
nation. I would like to thank Aldermen Witkowski and Bauman for
allowing an open process where we engaged many of the stakeholders/interested
parties to share their inputs and concerns. As with any process seeking
consensus, no one gets everything that they want but their input is valued,
heard and in some cases incorporated. The current substitute ordinance
presented by Witkowski /Bauman is a vast improvement over the original
submission from eighteen (18) months ago. I would say that many of us
learned a lot, which will be valuable as we implement the new ordinance. I
have personally worked with many of the stakeholders to ensure consensus and I
would like to take one step further and ask each of you to support the
substitute ordinance being introduced today.
I look forward to working with you in
the future. I am proud of what we have accomplished. We have served
our community well via our astute attention to detail. Please keep in mind
that this is an historic event and a privilege to be engaged in shaping our
historic future and protecting one of our cities most important assets.
Most importantly we are preserving a community that has achieved national
recognition for its "as built environment" and livability.
Enjoy your holiday season.
