The action you took to maintain the historic setback along the street will preserve the open feel of Terrace Avenue for the future. We also appreciate your request that the homeowners work to reduce the industrial appearance of the north side of the house that faces our home and the other historic houses on the block. Because there will be two driveways creating at least 20 feet of space between our homes, that side of the house will be visible not only from our home, but also from the public sidewalk and the street. The North Point North guidelines for new construction state: The building materials that are visible from the public right-of-way should be consistent with the colors, textures, proportions, and combinations of cladding materials traditionally used in North Point North. We remain concerned that the use of pale grey metal siding (which is not a material used as siding or shingles anywhere else in the historic district), particularly on the long low portion of the north side of the house, makes it look industrial, not residential. We are concerned that the reflective nature of metal in this location will result in light, from headlights coming up and down the driveways and motion sensitive safety lights on the drive, being reflected into our living room windows. The placement of grasses or hosta will only minimally help to soften the look and only during the three summer months of the year. We ask that the use of this non-historic material on the north facing side of the house be replaced with one of the two other materials, brick or wood, already used on other surfaces of the house. Either of those surfaces would be non-reflective and less industrial looking than the sheet metal shingles currently proposed, and more consistent with the North Point North Historic guidelines. Thank you again for your support of the setback requirements and for your consideration of our input on this issue of compliance with materials guidelines.
