Subject: FW: Marriott project

Dear Committee,

I am writing to express my absolute support for the proposed Marriott Hotel at the corner of Milwaukee and Wisconsin Avenue.  I am a business owner in downtown Milwaukee and live close by.  I formerly lived in the downtown area and plan on moving back over the next several years.  I was a little surprised to see that there was opposition to this excellent plan because of a concern over several buildings that opponents believe have historical significance.  Milwaukee is fortunate to have a number of architecturally beautiful, old buildings and I believe that preserving a number of those architectural gems (especially in the Third Ward, the Eastside and other neighborhoods) is critical to maintain the unique feel of Milwaukee.  However, the buildings that would be replaced by this project are, in my estimation, old with little historical value and have not been maintained over the years.  In addition, this is an area in the CBD which is crying for new, modern development.  The great cities of this country have an interesting mix of the old and the new there is simply no way for a city to move forward, develop and prosper without exciting developments like this Marriott Hotel.  May I also remind the Commission about the sad, lack of development in the downtown area over the past few years.  From my office, I can see a shell of a building that was being developed on Water and Juneau.  I also see blighted buildings that were scheduled for renovation or new development.  We need a catalyst and we need new development.  Stopping this project would simply be another step back for the city center.  We need to seize this opportunity now and move forward and make this city even greater.

Thank you for your time.

Tom
