As a UWM neighborhood homeowner, a UWM grad, a former Columbia Hospital patient, and a longtime advocate for the importance of retaining the unique cultural and architectural history of the City of Milwaukee, I am writing to ask you to support the permanent local historic designation of the Columbia Hospital at 2015-2025 E. Newport Ave. Expert research shows that Columbia Hospital has historic significance and qualifies for designation under three criteria. * e-1 “exemplification and development of the cultural, economic, social or historic heritage of the city” for its status as a research center at the forefront of medical sciences in Milwaukee, * e-5 “embodiment of distinguishing characteristics of an architectural type or specimen” as an intact example of an institutional Georgian Revival design and perhaps the last remaining example in Milwaukee of 19th century hospital design ideals, and * e-6 “identification as the work of an artist, architect, craftsman or master builder whose individual works have influenced the development of the city” for its association with master architects Schmidt, Garden & Martin and Eschweiler & Eschweiler." I am fully aware that the Commission's role is to determine designation based solely on historic significance, however I would like to add that in addition to meeting the criteria, buildings in this condition, or far worse, have been rehabbed and put back to use. Finally, the demolition and loss of such an integral part of this Milwaukee neighborhood and the UWM campus, would add considerably to ground fill, reversing substantial environmental efforts made by citizens of Milwaukee to "green" our city. Thank you for your consideration. Dawn McCarthy 2589 N Lake Drive Milwaukee, WI 53211
