Simple economics tell me that someday there will be a high-rise building where the Goll Mansion now stands. I accept that. But it should not be this building. There are many reasons to reject this proposal. I will focus on one: Street congestion. We are lucky to live along Prospect Avenue, one of the premier residential neighborhoods in Milwaukee. Alas, parking is already a downside; the city should not allow a new building to make it even harder to park on the street. This building will do so. The developers propose only two parking spots for guests and service providers. Our building demonstrates that 12 guest spots is about right for 100 units. Two spots for a building with 200 units? Nowhere near enough. The streetcar (we love it!) will eliminate several street parking places in front of our buildings; developers who will profit from the streetcar should be required to take that into account. These developers haven't. The proposed footprint provides nowhere to turn a car around. What goes in must come out -- backwards, across a sidewalk, into busy Prospect Avenue. That's dangerous; it's altogether a bad idea. That's reason enough to send this plan back to the drafters. Any new building should make this an even better neighborhood. Present residents as well as their eventual new neighbors deserve as much. In its present form, this proposal moves in the wrong direction. For all these reasons (and for all the others that my neighbors are telling you about), I ask the honorable committee members to reject this proposed development.
