Subject: Downtown Hotel and Historic Preservation
SOLUTION
Good morning Ald. Bob and esteemed Committee
Members,
I'm writing for two points, please:
APPROVE the Hotel to proceed
SAVE THE FACADE ONLY of 625 N.
Milwaukee
This approach would be a great compromise to both
issues, adding badly needed hotel capacity to downtown with
new economic development and preserving what is essentially the only
salvageable facade of the group of 'old' buildings under consideration. I
don't use the term 'historic' lightly and simply don't see sufficient
historic architectural character to justify halting this proposed
hotel.
I suggest saving the FACADE ONLY of 625 N.
Milwaukee due to its historic character and mass, but also recognize that in its
current form, configuration and condition, redevelopment may simply
not be feasible. The other buildings may be old, even historic, or have
historic significance, but are not justified to save due to such small stature
in comparison, or are of such numerous renovations and 'remuddleings' that
little historic character has been preserved to justify saving.
My background is as a recovering architect, turned
developer who LOVES historic preservation but is also prudent enough to realize
that not every old timber or brick has sufficient historic significance worthy
of preservation. That is precisely what is being dealt with in this
situation.
My modest credentials include:
- UWM-BS Arch
- UWM-MBA
- WI Licensed Real Estate Broker
- Gilda's Club-Director
- Near South Side Area Plan-CMT & PAG
- Milwaukee-certified EBE company
- 5th Ward Neighborhood
Assoc.-President
Approving a project of this significance also sends
a loud 'Welcome' out to the development community, which is listening intently
for your message. This proposal can be delicately implemented,
and should be. Respectfully submitted for your consideration and
requesting that you please send a loud approval for this hotel
proposal.
Have a great new year,
Randy Nass
