   3. New Work Fund

Minutes note: -Review Finalist Applications for Art and Civic Engagement Members and staff discussed that the total amount requested from all projects is $98,127, that all projects proved worthy for art and civic engagement, that all made changes as requested by the subcommittee, that the arts board has $30,000 ($25,000 available and $5,000 from conversion fund) available, and that perhaps the remaining amount ($25,000 from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation and $43,127 from other donations) can be acquired to fully fund all applicants. Members are encouraged to each solicit for additional donations. Members reviewed the following eight finalist applications in more detail as follows: Flexible seating plan project with about 20 seats. Request is for $17,035. Surplus project for welcome mats. Request is for $25,000. Part of the project is for programming poetry readings and stamping of poems. George Jones project. Request is for $9,900 for artists and materials. Two possible lobbies were located on Wisconsin Avenue. Project may end up in a lobby. Timeline for the light sensor is unclear. Project has support from the art museum. Black artists are represented in the project. Sculpture Milwaukee project to hold two refugee food events and the Riepenhoff oven on dates outside of the DNS, which was intentional. Location is to be determined on Wisconsin Avenue. Request is for $4,600 total ($2,300 each event). This project should be considered under regular New Work Fund. Sarah Gail Luther project for civic listening, performance, booth, and music. Request is for $4,250. Project will be public inside the DNC perimeter. Advise Tent project is for tent conversations and training for teenagers during four days of the DNC at the North Star Pavilion and during sites or festivals outside of the DNC. Request is for $12,842. Mary Schumacher project giving out free broadsides to the public for the DNC and throughout summer. Request is for $12,500. Voting for Disability project. Request is for $12,000. Pamphlet could be eliminated. The mural needs a location. Members considered awarding all applicants at one-third of their request with the attempt that the subcommittee try to acquire additional funding. At one-third funding or lower than expected funding from the arts board, applicants may have to reduce their scale or cease their projects. With unanimous consent, the subcommittee moved to remove the Sculpture Milwaukee refugee food events and Riepenhoff oven project application from Art and Civic Engagement to regular New Work Fund instead. Chair Morris abstaining. With unanimous consent, the subcommittee moved to notify and solicit feedback on project feasibility from the remaining seven applicants on awarding all requests at one-third of their requested amounts prior to the subcommittee making a final recommendation at the next meeting. Chair Morris to contact the applicants. -Review of Applications Members and staff discussed and reviewed the following three mural project applications as follows: Washington Heights bookcase mural project requesting $5,000. There is a $6,500 artist fee, neighborhood task force, and no mention of matching funds. Applicant should provide a letter stating that the owner will provide maintenance. Riverworks Development Corporation freestanding wave finding murals with maps project requesting $10,000. TRUE Skool is involved, will be paid $15,000, and will choose the local artists. Total project cost is $42,000. Applicant has obtained $25,000 from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, $7,000 private support, and other amounts. Applicant is asking for $4,000 from NIDC and $3,000 from the BID. Artists seemed to have already been chosen. Applicant is invited to attend the next meeting to clarify who the local artists are, how kids are involved, and other parts of the application. West Side Arts Unlimited mural installation requesting $10,500. Project seems unessential to the space. Money could perhaps be spent better. Applicant is invited to attend the next meeting to provide more details on maintenance, artist fee, and other details. With unanimous consent, the subcommittee recommended approval to award $5,000 in New Work Fund to the Washington Heights mural project. With unanimous consent, the subcommittee recommended approval to award $2,300 in New Work Fund to the Sculpture Milwaukee refugee food events and Riepenhoff oven project.
