Minutes note: - Updates on Projects
Members discussed the status of various projects that were previously awarded New Work or Conversation funds including as follows: Clarke Square Initiative project completed with an unveiling soon; Lake Park Friends project back on track; Letter Carriers monument project finished; no final report for Voices of the City project; all documents submitted for the Riverwest Radio project; 75 percent payment made to Still Water Collective project; status unknown and no funds given yet to Uptown Crossing project; no final report for 10th Community Health Center project; no ask for funds for Brady Street creatures project; Clean Wisconsin Garden Home project completed; no final report from and no further payment made to the Five Points and Bells of Milwaukee projects; and 3 out of 5 installations made for the Hank Aaron Trail working men project.
- Direction for 2020 Cycle
Chair Morris said that perhaps next year's cycle can focus on projects around the Democratic National Convention for the New Work Funds rather than on random projects that come in. Projects based around the DNC can promote the city. There has been interest for these projects from artists and the downtown business improvement district. Projects may range from banners, line entertainment, performances, and advice tents. Projects have to be nonpartisan and publically accessible. Perhaps a big artist piece, like a monument, can be made as a main DNC attraction.
Members discussed concerns over adherence to DNC security and parameters, opportunities for communities not associated with the DNC, and adherence to nonpartisanship.
Chair Morris further commented. Focusing on projects for the DNC can help the arts board make a bigger impact, raise its profile, and maximize exposure. Another interest is to invite Arielle Julia Brown, a monument artist who has done work on African American history and slavery, to come talk about monuments. | | | |
