Member Morris said that the subcommittee recommended to award $5,000 in New Work Funds to the Near West Side Partners' "Voices of the City" fence tile piece project for artist fees and materials, $5,000 in New Work Funds to the Clarke Square Neighborhood Initiative's "Tejiendo Raices" storytelling mural project for artist fees and materials, $1,000 in Conservation Funds to Riverwest Radio's light bulb projection installation for the light bulb contingent on the light bulb being functional, and $5,000 in New Work Funds to Still Waters Collective's creative communication soap box project for visual artist fees. The tile piece project will be located at Wisconsin Avenue School, involves 26 Street Partners, has a total budget of $11,900, and has funding confirmed. The storytelling mural is an intergenerational project involving families and a young artist in residency. The light bulb installation projects photos of the neighborhood and is situated at a storefront next to Mo's Irish Pub on Wisconsin Avenue downtown. The soap box project will occur at various spots in the City and has visual artists, musicians, disc jockey, a total budget of $62,900, $50,000 from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, and civic based sharing of ideas.

Member DeLind commented on the review panel's recommendations. There were 50 applications with 47 eligible and 3 ineligible applications. 36 applications were recommended to receive awards for either $8,000 or $4,000. Last year's allotment was at either $7,000 or $3,500. One awardee was a new applicant, Milwaukee Opera Theater. All projects were good. The panel is to be commended for their preparation and active participation.

Minutes note: Chair Ald. Murphy commented. He will submit a Common Council resolution recognizing a retiring City music and artistic director. He attended the Milwaukee Road unveiling of two silhouettes of workmen on pedestals on the Hank Aaron Trail that had 250 attendees. More money is being raised for the remaining three silhouettes. The Tandem Theater is closing.
Ms. Witte said that the arts board had awarded $7,500 for the Hank Aaron Trail silhouettes, has expressed dissatisfaction over the incomplete silhouettes, and that Kevin Stalheim was an arts board 2002 artist of the year.
