160702 04.CommunicationCommunication relating to administrative matters of the Charter School Review Committee.

Minutes note: Mr. Dan Greco said that they are currently working on finding a site for the school and a building at 10th and North is a possibility and would be near some other exciting developments, but the building will be expensive. They're currently working on financing and would be renting as a tenant, not a co-owner. He needs to know by the end of October if they can be in the school by next July. He was hoping to get a planning grant from the state, but he found out today that he did not receive the grant, so he will need to approach some private philanthropists. He has had many people asking him about joining the staff, so that's not one of his concerns. Janice Erloth and Susan Gramling from Children's Research Center appeared to tell the Committee that the FORWARD and ACT data exams have been embargoed and any data that was released was only released to each specific school. The schools cannot even release the data to their own boards of directors. This week each of the schools has received a version of the DPI report cards for their own review to report any potential errors to DPI for correction. The data will be released to the public on October 31st. Unfortunately, this means the committee will receive all the reports at one time. The plan was one night for the 3 high school reports (already have a meeting scheduled for 11/17), then two additional meetings for the remaining schools. There is one school that is up for 5-year renewal. The reports are all done so they would be gotten to members on Oct. 31st. . Elementary schools will be heard on Nov. 10th. There is also a meeting Oct. 13th as well as a December 15th one. The report will be go to Steering and Rules on January 6th. Ms. Mallory had mentioned how to market school performance to the public and Ms. Peay thought that would be a good agenda item. Ms. Mallory is concerned that there is confusion between what is a charter school versus a choice school. How can annual reports be synthesized and made public? How can it be gotten to the average person? Talk to the schools in terms of what they do and something could be done collectively to profile all the schools. The city charters to give parents options for their children and that contributes to a higher quality of life in the city. Ms. Peay suggested adding a link on the city web site to a profile of all the schools. Ms. Pointer-Mace said that the presentation for Steering and Rules could be used as a base for making information available to the parents and the public. Ms. Pointer-Mace suggested an opening statement, the annual reports and then the slide show presented at Steering and Rules as well as a history of the city's chartering. Ms. Scott Krei sugggested creating a "one pager" with links so that is very brief. Mr. Ingram suggested having schools appear and be more interactive with the public. Ms. Mallory would like someone who has a marketing background to work on this and the aldermen could also be involved for schools in their districts. Ms. Pointer-Mace thinks it should be more of a re-mixing and sharing of the data, rather than marketing. She also suggested getting photos from the schools to add to the web pages. Ms. Mallory really wants transparency for the public.
